Dancing for the Love of It: Why Dance Connection Puts Joy Ahead of Trophies

Every dance studio has a reason it exists. Some are built around trophies, rankings, and a full weekend schedule of travel. Ours was built around something simpler. When Denise opened Dance Connection in 1987 in a single rented room, teaching every class herself, the goal was to share the love of dance with as many children as possible, at rates real families could afford. Nearly four decades later, that is still the whole idea.
At Dance Connection Rochester, we teach dance for the joy of it, and we believe that is exactly where the best dancers, and the happiest kids, come from. This article explains what that philosophy looks like in practice and why it matters for your child.
If you have searched "non-competitive dance studio Rochester NY" or "fun dance classes for kids near me," here is what makes our approach different.
1. It Started With a Single Moment
Years ago, when our Co-Director Veronica was a little girl, Denise brought her to a dance competition. Watching the atmosphere that day, Denise came away certain of one thing: dance should be about the love of dance, not about trophies and scores. She wanted her dancers in a positive environment where they could show off everything they had learned without the pressure of being perfect and without the expense that so often comes with it.
That decision shaped everything that came after, and it still guides how we run the studio today.
2. Progress Is Measured Against Yesterday, Not Against Other Kids
When there is no scoreboard, a dancer's only real comparison is with themselves. Can they hold a balance a little longer than last month? Remember a combination they struggled with in the fall? Walk into class with more confidence than they had in September? Those are the wins we celebrate.
Children who learn to measure their own growth rather than rank themselves against classmates tend to stay motivated far longer, and they enjoy the process a great deal more.
3. Mistakes Become Part of Learning
A dancer who is afraid of being judged plays it safe. A dancer who feels supported tries the new turn, attempts the harder jump, and laughs when it does not work the first time. Our classes are designed to be a place where a wobble is simply information, not a lost point.
That freedom to try, miss, and try again is how real technique gets built, and it is a lesson that carries well beyond the studio.
4. Every Dancer Gets to Shine
In a joy-first studio, the stage is not reserved for a select few. Our dancers perform because performing is a wonderful experience, not because they earned a spot on a team. The shy six-year-old and the confident teenager both get their moment, and both get the same applause from a room full of people who love them.
We think every child deserves to feel what it is like to be cheered for.

5. Dance Should Be Affordable
From the very first day, Denise's goal was to teach at reasonable rates. Families should not have to choose between giving their child the arts and keeping the household budget intact. Without costly travel schedules, entry fees, and a constant cycle of new costumes for events, dance stays accessible to far more families.
You can see exactly what classes cost on our class fees page. No surprises.
6. Room to Explore More Than One Style
When a dancer is not locked into polishing a single routine for months, there is room to explore. Our students try tap, ballet, jazz, hip hop, modern, African, musical theatre, acrobatics, contemporary, lyrical, and pointe, and many discover a style they never expected to love. Our older dancers can even take a choreography class where they create dances of their own.
Exploration keeps dance fresh, and it builds well-rounded dancers with real versatility.
7. Teaching More Than Dance
As the studio grew, Veronica helped develop the philosophy we hold onto today: we teach more than just dance. Respect, kindness, responsibility, teamwork, and resilience are part of every class. Steps are the vehicle, but character is a big part of what our dancers take home.
Parents tell us the confidence they see in the studio shows up at school, at home, and with friends.
8. Giving Back Is Part of Who We Are
Instead of chasing trophies, our dancers use their talents to help others. Denise began producing "Dancing for a Cause" benefit shows, where our students perform and all profits go to a local charity, and that tradition continues every year. Through these annual events, the Dance Connection family has contributed over $150,000 to the Rochester community.
Learn more about these events on our community events page. Few things teach kids about generosity better than seeing their own performance make a real difference.
What a Joy-First Studio Looks Like Day to Day
Here is what families notice when they walk through our doors:
- Kids who are excited to come to class, week after week
- Teachers who know every dancer by name
- Encouragement for effort, not just for results
- Classes for every age, from Grownup & Me at 18 months to adults
- Performances where every dancer is celebrated
- Reasonable tuition without hidden extra costs
- A warm lobby full of dance families who have become friends
None of this means our dancers do not work hard. They do. They learn real technique, they are challenged, and they grow tremendously. The difference is that the motivation comes from inside them, from loving what they do, rather than from the fear of losing.
A Studio Built for Families
When we outgrew our old space, we did not just look for a bigger building. In 2021 we custom built a brand new studio designed around the way dance families actually spend their time: larger studios, more natural light, bigger lobbies, more room to socialize, and observation windows so parents can watch their dancers grow. It was designed from the ground up to feel like a second home.
That matters more than it might seem. When a child feels comfortable and welcome, they relax, and a relaxed dancer learns faster, tries harder things, and has more fun doing it. Many of our families have been with us for years, and that kind of loyalty is built on how a place makes people feel. We have always believed that if children love walking into the studio, everything else, including the skill, follows naturally. A dancer who is chasing a trophy may stop when the trophies stop coming. A dancer who simply loves to dance tends to keep dancing for life.
